Pause. Get your KiwiSaver account sorted for Money Month.

August marks the start of Sorted Money Month - a nationwide initiative led by the Retirement Commission to enhance the financial well-being of New Zealanders.

We’ve taken a KiwiSaver-approach to this year’s theme and adapted it to “Pause – Get your KiwiSaver account sorted!”

Why? Because research shows that expert advice pays off over the long term – and too many Kiwis have never got KiwiSaver advice and aren’t making the most of their accounts!

We want to normalise getting KiwiSaver advice, as if invested smartly your KiwiSaver account could become one of your largest assets over your lifetime.

Taking a moment to pause and get KiwiSaver advice early on can help you make sure you’re in the right fund for your goals and you’re maximising benefits like the Government contribution. These things can add up to tens of thousands of dollars over the long term, better setting you up for a more comfortable retirement.

Generate offers no-obligation KiwiSaver advice meetings. Our advisers can come to you at a time and place that suits or meet you over Zoom; to discuss your KiwiSaver options and help you decide on a plan that's best for your situation. They'll help you understand your risk tolerance and how it might affect your KiwiSaver investment and show you projection estimates of what you're on track to have at retirement - and what changes you could make to potentially increase that number.

Advice sessions generally last about 45 mins, and you’re welcome to bring along a friend, partner, housemate or colleague.

Over the next month we will be posting videos on our social media of Dom Harvey out in the community asking Kiwis about their KiwiSaver account goals and how much thought they’ve given to their retirement – let’s normalise talking about your KiwiSaver account.

We will be posting across our social media accounts, so keep an eye out for those. You can follow us on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok

If you want to learn more about Sorted Money Month head to sorted.org.nz where you can find community events like webinars and sessions with experts to help you get sorted.

If you've ever wondered what KiwiSaver is all about, you're not alone. It’s a popular topic, and for a good reason—set up wisely, your KiwiSaver account could play a big role in helping you secure your financial future. Let's dive into the basics of what KiwiSaver is and see how the Generate KiwiSaver Scheme could help you make the most of it.

What is KiwiSaver?

KiwiSaver is a voluntary savings scheme designed to help you save for retirement. It’s pretty straightforward: you contribute a small percentage of your income, and your employer and the government add a bit too. Your KiwiSaver provider invests the money and over time, these contributions can grow into a tidy sum, giving you a solid nest egg for your retirement years.

Why should I join a KiwiSaver scheme?

There are a few key reasons why KiwiSaver is a great idea:

1. Easy Saving

If you’re employed, your KiwiSaver contributions come straight out of your pay before you even see it. It’s a bit like setting up an automatic savings account—your money grows without you having to think about it. You can choose to set up a contribution of 3%, 4%, 6%, 8% or 10%.

If you’re self-employed or unemployed, you can set up a direct debit or make voluntary lump-sum deposits into your account.

2. Government contributions

Each year, the Government adds up to $521.43* to your KiwiSaver account if you contribute at least $1,042.86. It’s like getting bonus money for your retirement! *Eligibility criteria apply, details here.

3. Employer contributions

If you're employed, your employer is required to contribute at least 3% of your gross salary to your KiwiSaver account. This instantly boosts your investment without any extra effort from you.

4. First-home Withdrawal

KiwiSaver isn’t just for retirement. If you’re buying your first home, you might be able to withdraw most of your savings to help with the purchase.

Generate adviser to take on the best at the 2024 Paris Paralympics

We’re gearing up to cheer on one of our expert KiwiSaver advisers, Jesse Reynolds, at the 2024 Paris Paralympics!

Jesse was born with Proximal Focal Femoral Deficiency (PFFD), which led to his right foot being amputated for a prosthetic leg at a very young age.

Jesse told us he’s been swimming for a long time, and he found his passion while at school where he often outperformed his friends. After placing in the top three at a school competition, he decided to take things seriously, and soon he was making a splash on the international stage.

Jesse has competed in four World Championships and two Paralympic Games already, including Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Even a fracture right before Rio couldn’t stop him; he competed through the pain.

Jesse also scored a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham 2022.

As he prepares for his main event in Paris, the Men’s S9 100m Backstroke, we will be sharing updates on our Instagram page so you can follow Jesse’s campaign too.

When Jesse isn’t in the pool, he’s helping Kiwis in the Waikato with their KiwiSaver accounts. The Generate team is incredibly proud of Jesse and we can’t wait to support him at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Here’s to Jesse making waves once again! Go Jesse!
